Brenda Brainard (Miluk Coos) is an attorney specializing in Indian Law, with a focus on constitutional law, enrollment, jurisdiction, education, and elections. Early in her career, she played a key role in the restoration of federal recognition for her Tribe. She also served for 30 years as Director of the Indian Education Program Consortium, supporting nine school districts in Lane County.

In addition to her legal work, Brenda is a traditional weaver, storyteller, and dancer, and a dedicated advocate for MMIP awareness and legal change.

Join us on May 5 from 12–1 PM in the Cascade Library. You can also  (Zoom link also available via the QR code with this post). Come learn about her novel, Tilt! This event will be held in conjunction with the International Great Shake Out Day, Thursday October 16th, to promote earthquake awareness and preparedness.

This event is free and open to the public. .

All Ģý students who attend in person will be entered into our raffle for one of several giveaways.

Students who will be given an additional raffle entry!

Emma will engage in conversation with educators and Ģý students, staff, and faculty around the themes of the book.

Event will also include:

  • Light refreshments
  • Preparedness Info
  • Raffles

Agenda:

9:00 – Event space opens with light refreshments and time to gather and connect
9:30 – Emma will begin her talk. Her talk will be followed by book signing and a raffle.

 

Ģý the Author

Emma Pattee is a climate journalist and a fiction writer. She has written about the climate crisis for The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and more. In 2021, she coined the term “Climate Shadow” to describe an individual’s potential impact on climate change. Her debut novel, Tilt, was published in March and is a national bestseller, a New York Times Book Review’s Editors’ choice, and was named one of the most anticipated books of the year by NPR, Vogue, and Time Magazine.

The open house will celebrate:

  • the completion of the 2008 Cascade Campus bond construction program
  • the official inauguration of the new Cascade Library
  • the dedication of the Evelyn Crowell Center for African American Community History – to be installed over the coming year in the Cascade Library
  • a campus-wide book drive for the of Oregon – books can be donated at the library Checkout desk

Mark your calendar and plan on attending. Check out the great new spaces in the Cascade Library, grab some food, listen to music, and see a special performance by the Jefferson Dancers.
