Irish Set Dancing Fundamentals: Aran Islands
Learn set dances from the Aran Islands, located off Ireland's west coast. Build skills via step-by-step instruction and called dances. The final class includes a community dance with live music. All levels welcome. No partner needed.
Irish set dancing is a lively form of social dance similar to square dancing but with a distinctly Irish flair. Dancers move through figures while adding rhythmic, percussive footwork inspired by the music. Many of the dances we’ll explore in this class are half sets, danced by two couples, and feature lovely footwork. You'll learn the figures, foundational steps, footwork, and regional style through clear, step-by-step instruction. Each class includes practice with traditional music, followed by called dances and social dancing. The final class at a community dance with live traditional music gives you the chance to enjoy the dances in their natural social setting.
